How to Install Shimano SPD-SL Cleats

Step for installing cleats

Installing cleats can be a bit fiddly, but it's empowering to know how to do it yourself! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out.

Step 1: Locate the Attachment Points
On the bottom of your SPD-SL cleat-compatible cycling shoes, you’ll find three holes about one-third of the way down. This is where you will attach the cleats.

Step 2: Position the Cleats
Place the cleat on the sole of the shoe, aligning the cleat holes with the three holes in the shoe. Note that the cleats are identical for both the left and right shoes.

Step 3: Insert Washers and Bolts
Position a cleat washer over each hole, and insert a cleat bolt through each washer into the hole. Use a 4 mm hex wrench to lightly tighten the bolts.

Step 4: Adjust the Cleat Position
To find your optimal cleat position, get on your bike and pedal a few strokes. Adjust the cleat forward, backward, left, or right until your knees are in line with your toes and there is no strain on your joints. Loosen the bolts slightly to make these adjustments.

Step 5: Secure the Cleats
Once you've found the perfect position, firmly tighten the bolts with the 4 mm hex wrench. Ensure the bolts are tight enough so that the cleat does not move when you clip in and out of your pedals.

Step 6: Final Adjustments and Professional Help
Finding the perfect cleat position might take a few tries. If you're unsure, consider consulting a qualified bike fitter, your local bike shop, or an indoor cycling instructor for assistance.

Additional Tips
Apply a small dab of grease to each captive nut on the base of your shoe before inserting the bolts. This prevents the bolts from seizing.
Use a torque wrench with a 4 mm hex bit to tighten the bolts to Shimano's recommended torque setting of 5-6 Nm (43-52 in-lb). This ensures the bolts are secure but not overtightened, which could damage your shoes or the bolts.

By following these steps, you'll ensure your cleats are properly installed and adjusted for a comfortable and efficient ride.
